After a lengthy and determined campaign, U.S. Representative Will Hurd of Texas has retired from the 2020 Republican presidential race and thrown his weight behind former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley.
Hurd landed in the center of attention when he announced his intention to run as a serious contender, despite the fact that he had been out of Congress for nearly a decade. The GOP viewed his bid as a long shot at best.
In an interview, Hurd explained his reason for endorsing Haley. He expressed admiration for her positions on foreign policy, economic security, and security for all citizens. He emphasized that he believed her vision for a unified America encompassing both sides of the aisle was robust, comprehensive, and much needed.
Haley brings executive experience to the table as an ex-governor and U.N Ambassador. Hurd also noted that he believes her to be an effective bridge between the left and right, and she carries the weight of the rightwing mantle — an outsider people are open to.
Hurd’s departure leaves only two major Republican contenders left in the race. While he admitted that he wishes he had stepped up sooner, he also emphasized that he wanted to wait until a candidate emerged who was perfect for his message and policy ideals.
With his vast network of high-level influential GOP contacts, combined with his unique list of non-establishment supporters, Hurd believes that Haley is the candidate who can finally earn the important Republican backing for success in the 2020 general election.
Hurd’s endorsement is not only a boost for Haley, who needs to turn her campaign around and move up in the race, but also a major show of support for her opponent’s fall campaign.
Hurd is now backing Haley fully and offering her his network of contacts, as he expressed in his parting words:
“I’m doing this because I believe Nikki Haley is the person who can unite our party and bring Republicans and Democrats together on the issues we care about.”
