Costco, Target and Walmart have all issued a massive recall on more than five million blenders after reports of lacerations and fires.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), alongside Health Canada, have recalled 5.3 million Ninja blenders that were sold in the United States and Canada. Consumers are being urged to stop using the recalled blenders immediately due to the fire and laceration risks.
All of the recalled blenders were manufactured by SharkNinja Operating LLC and sold at a wide variety of retailers, including Costco, Target, Walmart and other stores between November 2012 and April 2021. Cost of the recalled models ranged from $100 to $460.
The blenders are particularly dangerous when used with their single-serve cups, which can detach during blending and result in an exposed blade. Already, there have been 68 reports of lacerations or punctures to skin, as well as nine reports of property damage due to fires.
Video footage showing a blender blade in a Ninja CuZoon Single Serve Cup posted on social media on April 18, 2021, ultimately prompted an investigation by the CPSC to look into the underlying issues.
The recalled blenders include the following models: Nutri Ninja Auto-iQ 1200W kitchen system BL682, Nutri Ninja Auto-iQ 1500W blender duo BL487T, Ninja professional blender BL685, Ninja blenders BL201, BL205, BL480, BL480D, BL481, BL482, BL486CO, BL490, BL491, BL492, BL492W, BL640, BL680, BL682, BL688, and BL2013.
The CPSC has instructed consumers to stop using the recalled blenders immediately, and to inspect the blender blade assembly, the gear part, and the bottom of the single-serve blender cup to determine whether or not it is included in the recall.
Those with recalled blenders can contact SharkNinja Operating LLC for a free replacement blade assembly. Consumers may also contact the company at 1-877-855-8593 from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m.to 6 p.m. ET Saturday and Sunday.
The Ninja recall comes after a similar recall from Blendtec on April 15 over risk of lacerations and burns. In that recall, 4.3 million Blendtec Total Blender Classic and Professional Series blenders sold between March 2011 and September 2019 were ordered to be put away in storage for safekeeping.
