The fraudulent trial of Sam Bankman-Fried—the chief executive of cryptocurrency firm Alameda Research—has been a headline story since August of last year. It is anticipated to be the largest fraud trial of a cryptocurrency company executive in the industry’s history. Now, as the trial date approaches, speculation has grown as to who might testify and how their testimonies will affect the outcome of the trial.
The judge presiding over Bankman-Fried’s case recently released some information about the potential witnesses who could testify. This includes key figures from Alameda Research, as well as several of Bankman-Fried’s associates from the cryptocurrency sector.
The lead witness in the case will likely be Bankman-Fried’s former Chief Operating Officer, Janelle Masic. Masic is expected to provide testimony regarding some of the more controversial strategies Bankman-Fried allegedly implemented while at the helm of Alameda. Masic resigned from the firm in December 2020 and is currently the CEO of a competing cryptocurrency hedge fund.
Other members of the senior management team at Alameda have also been named as possible witnesses, including former Chief Technology Officer Jarred Gonsalez and former Chief Financial Officer Michael Tenner. Both are expected to provide insight into the allegedly irregular financial practices of the firm.
The potential witness list also includes members of Bankman-Fried’s personal network, such as Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse and investor Peter Thiel. Garlinghouse is expected to be asked about Bankman-Fried’s involvement with the Ripple platform, which is accused of being a scheme to defraud investors. Thiel, on the other hand, could provide insight into Bankman-Fried’s history of investments and potential motivations.
Finally, several other individuals associated with the cryptocurrency industry, such as venture capitalist Bill Gurley, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong and Block.one CTO Dan Larimer, are also named as potential witnesses in the trial. These individuals could help shed light on Bankman-Fried’s business dealings, as well as the general regulatory climate surrounding cryptocurrency companies.
