Masayoshi Son Bets Big on Southeast Asian Digital Hub

Malaysia is positioning itself as a global powerhouse for artificial intelligence, and SoftBank appears ready to fuel that ambition with a massive financial commitment. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim recently revealed that SoftBank Group plans to pour 50 billion dollars into the country, focusing heavily on data centers and emerging technologies. The announcement follows high level discussions between Anwar and SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, who has already earmarked specific sites in both peninsular Malaysia and Kuching, Sarawak for these developments.

This staggering investment aligns perfectly with Kuala Lumpur’s broader vision to transform the country into a recognized AI nation by 2030. To reach this goal, the government has rolled out a comprehensive national action plan designed to modernize infrastructure and boost technical capabilities across the board. As part of this push, SoftBank has already begun laying the groundwork through framework agreements with partners like Grab and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad to explore specialized computing services in the region.

SoftBank joins an increasingly crowded field of American tech giants vying for a piece of Malaysia’s growing digital economy. In recent years, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon Web Services have all committed billions toward cloud regions and AI infrastructure within the country. This surge of interest is reflected in official figures from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority, which show nearly 94 billion dollars in data center related investments since 2021. While SoftBank has yet to officially comment on the reports, the scale of the proposed deal suggests a significant shift in how global capital views Malaysia’s role in the future of intelligence.
