Hunter Biden, the son of former Vice President Joe Biden, is willing to testify in a public forum about his past business dealings in Ukraine, according to his lawyer.
The news comes after Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) subpoenaed Hunter Biden to testify before the House Oversight and Reform Committee. In a statement released Tuesday, Biden’s lawyer, George Mesires, said his client is eager to cooperate with the investigation and appear in a public forum.
“Mr. Biden is willing to comply with the request of the Oversight and Reform Committee and appear in a public hearing before the panel,” Mesires said. “Hunter recognizes the importance of the Committee’s work and seeks to cooperate and provide information. We have reached out to the Committee, and we hope the Committee will agree to having a public hearing in order to provide much-needed transparency to this committee investigation.”
Jordan had requested documents from the Biden family to investigate past business dealings. Specifically, he requested documents related to a natural gas firm where Hunter Biden had been a director.
Biden’s lawyer said he would provide documents related to the investigation “as permitted by applicable law.”
The news about Hunter Biden’s willingness to testify comes after the Trump administration released a phone call transcript between President Trump and the Ukrainian president over a possible investigation into the Biden family. The call was followed by a whistleblower complaint sparking a House impeachment inquiry.
Hunter Biden has been at the center of the controversy and has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing. His lawyer has previously said he would cooperate with any investigation into his past business dealings.
It remains to be seen if the House Committee on Oversight and Reform will accept Hunter Biden’s voluntarily offer to appear for a public hearing. But this development shows that Biden is eager to cooperate and put his past dealings in Ukraine in the public eye.
